Kate Winslet’s story of near drowning while filming “Titanic”

One of the greatest movies of all time is “Titanic”. The classic tale of emotional love between Jack and Rose, played by Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate winslet, has long carved its place in Hollywood records as a timeless masterpiece rivaled by only a few other films.

For Winslet, the role won her more fame than she could have imagined. His popularity skyrocketed overnight, and more acting doors were open to him. In addition, she won several nominations for awards and won a pretty penny for the role.

All of these benefits come at a price. The actress went through an intense film production process that challenged her mentally and physically. It was so bad that while filming one of the scenes, Winslet thought she was really drowning.

Kate Winslet almost drowned in ‘Titanic’

The film was born out of the tragic tales of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is therefore natural that director James Cameron shot many scenes on the water. Winslet, for the most part, felt like she was fighting for her life due to the busy production process.

In one scene, she and her co-star Dicaprio were near a closed door as a wave of water fell on them. Eventually the water overwhelmed them and they were submerged. When the production team opened the door to allow Winslet to resurface, her coat caught on one of the iron bars.

According to the Reader star, she had exhausted her tune and felt like she was drowning by the time. Eventually, she was saved, but Cameron immediately asked her to shoot the role again. Not wanting to look like a weakling, she submitted to play the scene. The actress also faced other grueling scenes that left her with scars. She reportedly chipped a small bone in her elbow and had deep bruises on all of her arms.

Cameron thought the actor was not in danger

Although the actor had just watched his life pass before his eyes, his ordeal did not immediately elicit an emotional reaction from Cameron. Instead, the famous director continued with the production process.

The seriousness of the situation did not appear to him until ten minutes later. He later claimed he was unaware that Winslet was really affected by the almost tragic scene, but claimed the actor was not actually in danger.

“At that point, we did that scene,” Cameron said according to The Los Angeles Times, “I knew Kate was pretty stoic, she never told me she didn’t want to continue. It only occurred to me about 10 minutes later that she was really shaken up. [In this scene] she was never in physical danger, but she realized it.

Kate Winslet was afraid of James Cameron

Cameron is an award-winning director and has earned respect in Hollywood. Known for his strict attitude on set, it was no surprise that Winslet, who had barely passed his twenties, feared him greatly.

“Titanic” was the first time the “Revolutionary Road” star worked with the legendary director. She often felt the whip of her temper, which made filming the classic more stressful in addition to the chores scenes.
“He’s got a temper you wouldn’t believe,” Winslet revealed. Fortunately for the actress, Cameron only wielded the tip of her composure to her stars. Winslet said the director couldn’t do everything to berate them as it could affect the quality of their performance.

Regardless, Winslet always remembered Cameron as “a really hard nut to crack” but was very determined to make the film a success.

James Cameron mellowed with old age

You’d think Winslet wouldn’t be interested in working with Cameron again after struggling while filming “Titanic.” However, it seems that time really heals old wounds. The actress has teamed up with the famous director of the sequel to the sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar 2”.

Fortunately, his experience this time contrasts sharply with his previous collaboration with the director. She was amazed to see that the 67-year-old had calmed down as he got older.

“The Jim Cameron on Avatar, he’s calmer. I will say he just got more into his real me, I think. It’s because of the experience, ”Winslet told Collider. “It’s also because he’s already done Avatar, so he knows this world and he knows these characters.”
