A couple have come under fire for hosting a Titanic-themed wedding – with many saying the massive deaths during the tragedy shouldn’t be celebrated.
A photo of the newlyweds, believed to be from the United States, kissing a DIY model from the bow of the ship was shared on the Facebook group That’s It, I’m wedding shaming (happy edition not banned), where it was criticized by marriage critics.
But while some argued that romanticizing the shipwreck that killed more than 1,500 people in 1912 was insensitive, others said the tragedy happened too long ago for the marriage to be in bad taste.
“My niece got married last weekend at a Titanic-themed wedding,” the post from the bride’s aunt read. “She absolutely wanted a photo prop for her party, so my husband accepted the challenge.”
A couple, pictured, who have not been named and are believed to be from the United States, had a Titanic-themed wedding that has divided opinions
While some pointed out that real people died in the sinking, others said it happened a long time ago.
“He built the frame and I painted it. Such a fun project that I had to share. It was a beautiful day and she was delighted.
The photo shows the newlyweds posing at the DIY ship’s bow model, a moment reminiscent of the 1997 film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as the doomed ship’s beloved passengers.
Some people found the idea of a Titanic-themed wedding distasteful because James Cameron’s film was based on a real tragedy that killed over 1,500 people under horrific circumstances.
“It really fucked me up,” one wrote. “My dad’s great-uncle was a 15-year-old driver on that damn boat that died a terrifying death. It is NOT ROMANTIC !! And after? Ceremonies on the theme of Pompeii. ‘
People said it was in bad taste to romanticize a shipwreck, while some criticized the James Cameron movie starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio for turning the tragedy into a romantic story.
A second commented: “REAL PEOPLE ARE DEAD. Like many of them, ”while a third added:“ I blame this stupid movie for turning a terrible tragedy that killed 1,500 people into a romantic story.
Another wrote: “No. No. No. DON’T romanticize the mass deaths, ”while another wrote:“ The movie was always about the actual event, so what they were trying to emulate is in bad taste. It’s just awful. What’s wrong with people. ‘
Some have pointed out that if people idealize the wreckage of the Titanic now, they might move on to other tragedies such as 9/11 later.
However, one person noted that the couple weren’t the only ones romanticizing the sinking.
Some said the couple didn’t romanticize the wreck, but just enjoyed the luxury seen in the movie, while others said that basing your wedding reception on a shipwreck doesn’t promise great things. For the wedding.
Titanic: The shipwreck that killed over 1,500 people and was turned into a movie
James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, made the 1912 shipwreck the center of a love affair.
The RMS Titanic was the largest ocean liner owned by the White Star Line Company when it was completed in 1912.
The ship departed from Southampton and headed for New York on its maiden voyage, but never made it.
On April 15, 1912, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank a few hours later.
The ship is estimated to be carrying 2,224 passengers when it left Southampton, including some of the wealthiest people of the time, and emigrants from Ireland and the UK to the United States.
More than 1,500 people died in the wreckage, making it the biggest loss of life in a shipwreck at the time.
It was discovered after the sinking that the boat only had a lifeboat sufficient to carry only half of the passengers to safety.
It was also found that the crew had not been properly trained to perform an evacuation, for this reason, they did not fill the lifeboats to their maximum capacity.
It is estimated that only 710 people survived the sinking and were rescued by RMS Carpathia.
In 1997, James Cameron adapted the story of the wreck into his film, and the sinking of the Titanic inspired the disaster film genre.
“I was working in a Titanic museum and the number of people wanting to get married / engaged on the stairs was wild,” another revealed.
But some have defended the couple saying they are basing their marriage on the romantic film and not the shipwreck, while others have noted that the tragedy happened over 100 years ago.
“The wedding is on the theme of the Titanic ship, not the theme of tragedy.
“It’s clearly based on the movie and a ship that was a romantic place?” ”
“It was the height of luxury and romance at the time and the film also inspires my people,” one wrote.
A second commented: ‘PeoPle DIed! 1 !!! 100 years ago. Stop being so critical, ”while a third added:
“People just love the movie and the love story, they don’t think about the tragedy and they shouldn’t.”
Another commented: “It’s been 86 years since the Titanic sank, we can joke about it now.”
Elsewhere, others have said that your shipwreck wedding reception doesn’t promise great things for the upcoming wedding.
“It implies that you expect your marriage to sink,” one suggested.
“So your marriage is based on a shipwreck?” It looks promising, ”added another.
