Should unvaccinated NYers pay their own medical bills if they contract COVID

COVID-19 is readily available throughout New York State. Should people who choose not to get the vaccine be forced to pay their own medical bills if they catch the deadly virus and are hospitalized? An Illinois state official introduced a bill that would require residents of that state, who choose to remain unvaccinated, to pay out of pocket for all the medical care they need if they catch COVID. 19. Illinois State Representative Jonathan Carroll noted,

“I think it’s about time we said, ‘You choose not to get the vaccine, so you’re also going to take on the risk that if you get COVID and get sick, the responsibility lies with you.’”

New York, especially New York City, has very strict mandates and requirements to ensure that all residents have been vaccinated. According to the most recent data released by Governor Kathy Hochul, these are the latest vaccination statistics (as of December 7, 2021)

  • Percentage of New Yorkers aged 18 and over who received at least one dose of vaccine – 86.5%
  • Percentage of New Yorkers aged 18 and over with a completed vaccine series – 78.8%
  • Percentage of New Yorkers aged 18 and over with at least one dose of vaccine (CDC) – 91.9%
  • Percentage of New Yorkers aged 18 and over with a complete immunization series (CDC) – 81.2%
  • Percentage of all New Yorkers with at least one dose of vaccine – 74.9%
  • Percentage of all New Yorkers whose vaccination series is completed – 67.4%

Data of Governor Hochul’s COVID-19 Update released on December 8, 2021

Should New York be the next state to introduce a bill requiring the unvaccinated take responsibility for their own medical bills? It’s a slippery slope, I can say that for sure. Second, will we make people who contract HIV / AIDS, who have not used adequate protection during sex or intravenous drug use, to pay for their own medical care? HIV / AIDS is a transmissible and preventable virus, like COVID-19, after all. Would we go one step further and demand that people who develop diabetes from an unhealthy diet pay for their own medical care because it can be avoided? What about women who have unprotected sex and become pregnant, should they pay for their own medical treatment during pregnancy and childbirth because they have chosen not to use condoms or contraception? ? All of these things might sound outrageous to you, but someone else might think it’s a good plan. Let me know where you stand on the matter!
