Star Pies, Cats Excluded, Saints ax three

COLLINGWOOD striker Chloe Molloy tops a list of stars sitting out in the second round due to health and safety protocols.

After losing his entire opponent to the Western Bulldogs earlier this week, Geelong will face Carlton with four lone senior stars – midfielders Nina Morrison, Julia Crockett-Grills and Sophie Van De Heuval, as well as defender Georgie Rankin.

On Saturday morning, the Cats also retired Madisen Maguire (HS protocol) and she was replaced by Georgia Clarke, with Steph Williams added on an emergency basis.

Young midfield pair Darcy Moloney and Laura Gardiner and striker Danielle Higgins will play their first games of the year, while raw player Gabbi Featherston will make her debut.

Join Molloy on the sidelines for the Magpies is skipper Brianna Davey (ACL) and Tarni Brown (concussion), with Alana Porter, Aleisha Newman and Amelia Velardo on the side.

st kilda swung the ax after their disappointing loss to Richmond, dropping Kate McCarthy, Bella Shannon and Jess Matin, while former skipper Rhi Watt will miss out due to health and safety protocols.

That leaves the Saints dependent on second player Leah Cutting in the ruck, while they will happily reunite with the important trio Kate Shierlaw, Nicola Xenos and Molly McDonald of health and safety protocols, as well as Nat Exon.

Saturday will mark the fast striker Xenos’ first game since 2020, having missed 2021 with a ruptured ACL.

Maddy Guérin was appointed instead of tough carlton midfielder Grace Egan, who will miss at least a month with a punctured lung and broken ribs.

None of the four teams playing Saturday have had to rely on substitute players to fill their emergencies, unlike Melbourne and Richmond who play Friday night.
