Anemoi Marine Technologies, a UK supplier of rotor sails, has entered into an agreement with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (CHI), one of China’s leading shipbuilding organisations. CHI has nine yards capable of annual production of up to 7.5 million dwt across all major vessel segments and a large global customer base.
CHI customers will now have the option of installing Anemoi’s rotor sails on new build vessels or retrofitting them while in drydock. Under the terms of the agreement, the companies can offer a turnkey installation solution to customers.
Nick Contopoulos, COO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, said, “This is another exciting milestone for Anemoi that will accelerate the adoption of our emissions reduction technology. We are proud to have obtained the commitment of a large group of Chinese shipyards. VS
Anemoi already has more than 170 employees in its production and assembly facilities in Jiangsu Province, eastern China, and is currently expanding its production capacity.
According to data from the International Windship Association (IWSA), large commercial vessels with wind-assisted propulsion – including Anemoi’s technology – have recently surpassed the 1 million dwt mark in carrying capacity of freight.
“With fifty wind propulsion system platforms installed on these 21 vessels to date and a planned milestone of 100 installed platforms to be achieved by the end of 2023, the price of propulsion technology is coming down. Reaching the milestone of one hundred installed rigs will represent an important market marker for wind propulsion technology in particular,” said Gavin Allwright, IWSA General Secretary.
