CLEVELAND – The WWII USS Cod submarine returns home this weekend after undergoing renovations in Erie, Pa.
After more than seven weeks of sandblasting the hull, removing scrap metal, adjusting new steel and applying new paint at the Dungeon Shipbuilding Plant in Erie, the USS Cod will be refloated for the return of towing to Cleveland this week.
Paul Farace, the skipper of the Cod, is in daily contact with the yard staff and the captain of the tug to alert everyone to a firm day and time when the Cod can set out for the port of Cleveland.
“Everyone involved has done an amazing job shaping the Cod ship, but we’re ready to come home and start touring again,” Farace said.
The Cod crew are hoping to return their submarine to Cleveland next weekend if the tug can arrive in Erie on Friday or Saturday.
The tow is expected to take around 13 hours and will follow the offshore route taken to Erie on June 13.
