Waterville senior couple got ripped off with all their money

According to the Kennebec Journal, the couple were seen sitting and waiting at Robert LaFleur Airport in Waterville for the arrival of a flight. When airport manager Randy Marshall approached the couple to let them know that no further flights were scheduled, they told him they were waiting for a plane carrying millions of dollars to land soon.

The couple had received calls from crooks letting them know they had won a cash prize worth millions in cash. However, in order to get the prize and receive the money by air, they had to prepay the taxes on it. They were told the only way to prepay taxes was to use gift cards, and a lot of them.

The couple did just that. They bought as many as they could with what they had for cash, then gave the scammers the numbers of all the gift cards. After that, they were made aware of the date and time the plane would land in Waterville with their millions in cash.

Airport manager Randy Marshall even called the Portland Jetport to help assure the couple that no such planes were scheduled to land in Maine. Marshall then called the Waterville Police Department. The office Linda Smedberg was the response agent and went out of her way to help the couple cancel any remaining gift cards they could. History indicated that they were able to write off enough to cover two months of their bills and mortgage.

Waterville Deputy Police Chief William Bonney reminds Mainers that no legitimate business would ask for payments in gift cards or iTunes cards. Plus, he said no business would threaten to show up on your doorstep and arrest you.

Officer Smedburg told KJ,

“We get a lot of scam reports. If you have any doubts or questions, give us a call. Call the police, we can usually tell quite easily. We prefer that you come to us to clarify rather than become a victim.
