Why did the ship sink and who was really to blame?

Titanic explored the title ship tragedy and gave way to two questions about this event: How did the unsinkable ship sink and who was to blame?

Titanic tells a love story while addressing the drama of the sinking of the famous ship, leaving room for two questions about this event: why the unsinkable Titanic sank and who is to blame? James Cameron is one of the most respected filmmakers in the industry, and although his name is primarily associated with the sci-fi genre, one of his biggest projects does not come from this world: Titanic, a disaster drama film released in 1997.

According to accounts of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, Titanic tells the story of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), two passengers of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship on its ill-fated maiden voyage. Although the main focus of the story is the forbidden romance between Jack and Rose, Titanic Also takes the time to explore the sinking of the ship (but not in detail), introducing some of the people involved in its construction and showing the tragedy of the sinking from different parts of the ship.

Although James Cameron did a lot of research while developing Titanic, even while visiting the remains of it, he was mistaken about many details, which made the public wonder what had sunk the allegedly unsinkable vessel and who was responsible, if there is someone.

Why the Titanic sank when it was supposed to be unsinkable

The real RMS Titanic

The Titanic was presumed unsinkable, which was a big part of its appeal. Unfortunately, the Titanic was not at all unsinkable, and after failing to dodge an iceberg, the ship sank. However, historians and other experts are still debating why the Titanic sank, and the best answer is that it was a combination of circumstances. First, the Titanic sailed at high speed, which was not ideal in iceberg-laden waters like those of the North Atlantic. The crew also rejected an iceberg warning from a nearby ship (the Californian), which radioed the Titanic to warn them of the dense ice in the field, but as the message did not begin with “MSG” ( Master’s Service Gram), the Titanic’s radio operator did not transmit it because he did not consider it urgent. Others claim that one of the ship’s crew made a fatal wrong turn when he panicked after hearing the order to turn “to starboard”. The researchers also found that the material the Titanic was made of had a high concentration of “slag,” a cast iron residue that can shatter metal, weakening parts of the ship. There are also studies that show that the weather conditions contributed to the sinking, so there was a lot of evidence that played against the Titanic, and it’s complicated to pinpoint just one reason.

Who was to blame for the sinking of the Titanic?

William Murdoch and captain of the Titanic

While finding a concrete reason why the Titanic sank is complicated, finding someone to blame is much more difficult. For years, many have blamed Captain Edward John Smith for the sinking of the Titanic as he ignored warnings from other ships (although, again, there is the above detail of the radio operator not transmitting not the message to Smith) and didn’t slow down, and some even believe that Smith was trying to improve the crossing time of the Olympic, the sister ship of the Titanic. Others accuse the White Star Line of letting the ship go at full speed and not adding enough lifeboats; Bruce Ismay (president of White Star Line) for supposedly encouraging Smith to maintain high speed; and First Officer William Murdoch, who ordered the ship to be steered around the iceberg and the engines reversed, and many argue that was a mistake. The tragedy of the Titanic was the result of a combination of circumstances and bad decisions, and a reason and a person to blame might never be specified.
